About Masik Shivratri
Shivratri is considered to be one of the greatest festivals celebrated by the Shiva followers and in fact the entire Hindu majority. Masik Shivratri refers to the monthly shivratri in the chaturdashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha.
The Masik Shivratri that falls in the month of magha is celebrated as Mahashivratri. The date of Masik Shivratri and Mahashivratri is established after studying the amawasyant schedule (no moon) and purinamant schedule (full moon).
Legends have it that, on the night of Mahashivratri, lord Shiva suddenly appeared in the form of Linga. The Shiva Linga was worshiped by lord Vishnu for the first time and the birth of Lord Shiva was marked as Shivratri. From that day onwards, the devotees of Lord shiva started worshiping the Shiva Ling in the honor of Lord Shiva.
If you wish to observe the Masik Shivratri fast, you can start from Mahashivratri and continue it for a year. There are instances of the goddesses observing a fast on Shivratri in the mythological books and references. Goddess Sita, Lakshmi, Indrani, Rati, Savitri, Saraswati, Gayatri and Parvati are mentioned to have been observing Shivratri fasts.
In sourthern part of India, the vrat observed for Lord Shiva is termed as Pradosh Vrat or Pradosham. It is observed on both Trayodashi tithi, namely- Shukla Paksha Trayodashi and Krishna Paksha Trayodashi.
