About Simha Sankranti

Simha Sankranti marks the day when the Sun moves from Karka Rashi (Cancer) to Simha (Leo). Simha Sankraman is a significant South Indian festival. The day also marks the beginning of the Simha month which is a part of the various solar calendars followed by Indians. This day starts the Chinga month as per Malayalam calendar, Avni month as per Tamil month and Bhadra month as per the Bengali calendar. Those who have Sun placed in the Cancer sign in their horoscope are going through the dasha period of Planet Sun should get the Sun (Surya) puja done. Significance of Simha Sankranti :
  • Sun God, Lord Vishnu and Lord Narsimha Swami are prayed on the occasion of Simha Sankranti.
  • People visit Vishnumurthy Temple situated at Kulai near the city of Mangalore.
  • Narikela Abhishekha which is considered to be a holy bath is specially performed on the occasion of Simha Sankranti. Specially cleansed coconut water is used for Narikela Abhishekha.
  • Appada Pooja to please Lord Ganesh is performed and offerings in form of Hoovina Pooja are made to Lord Vishnumurthy on this occasion and the celebrations continue till Kanya Sankraman.
Importance of Simha Sankranti

It is said that during the reign of the Chand dynasty, artisans displayed their products in the palace on Simha Sankranti. They were certified by the King for their efforts and attempt. Common men and women of the dynasty also became a part of the celebrations and they offered fruits and flowers to the members of royal family. The tradition of offering fruits and other offerings to the members of royal family was known as Rite of Olag.

Bread made from horse bean poured with butter and ghee was consumed throughout the Kumaun region on this day. The widespread use of ghee on the occasion of Simha Sankranti has earned it the pseudo name of Ghrit Sankranti in Bageshwar region of Kumaun in Uttarakhand.

Rituals of Simha Sanskranti :
  • On the occasion Simha Sankranti, devotees worship Lord Vishnu, Sun God, and Lord Narsimha Swami.
  • Nariyal (coconut) abhisheka is performed on this day where coconut water is used.
  • Lord Ganesha is worshipped before all the rest of the puja ceremony to please him and it is called the appada puja.
  • The Hoovina puja to Lord Vishnumurthy continues for a month until the sun transits to Kanya rashi.
  • Flowers, fruits and different preparation of sweets is offered to the deity.
  • Mantras are chanted to seek blessings from the Lord.
