About Matsya Jayanti

The festival of Matsya Jayanti is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Lord Matsya, who is said to be the very first manifestation of Lord Vishnu in the form of Fish, during the Satya Yuga. The 'Matsya Avatar' is a one-horned fish that arrivred during the 'Mahapralay'. Matsya Jayanti is observed on the 'Tritiya' i.e., 3rd day during the 'Shukla Paksha' in the month of 'Chaitra'. This celebrations falls between the auspicious 'Chaitra Navratri' (the 9-day period designated for Goddess Durga) and coincides with the grand 'Gangaur festivities.

Special Puja and prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu on this day. The temples which are dedicated to Lord Vishnu is the 'Nagalapuram Veda Narayana Swamy Temple'. It is close to Tirupati, in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Rituals, Importance and Significance of Matsya Jayanti :

Matsya Avatar is the first manifestation of Lord Vishnu. According to the story, Lord Vishnu in the avatar of one-horned fish saved the lives of Manu and the Saptarishis during the great flood. Lord Vishnu also rescued the Vedas from the demon and restored order to the Universe.
