How people celebrate Lord Krishna birthday on Janmaashtami
Birth of Lord Krishna took place at midnight between the first and the second day. The celebrations begin accordingly during the midnight and is at its peak during the time when Lord Krishna was born. There are Aartis being performed along with the rocking of the cradle and singing of hymns. The idol of Lord Krishna is bathed with milk and this is later on distributed as Prasad among the devotees along with sweets. Some people fast on the first day and break it at midnight but there are some other people who fast for both the days. This depends on the health condition and the devotion of the devotees. Moreover, there is also the continuous chanting of mantras and shlokas. There is also another ritual like chanting the different names of Lord Krishna and this takes place in the temples. Also during Janmasthami different types of sweet dishes and sweets are prepared from milk and other milk products as it is said that Lord Krishna was very fond of sweets and milk. And these are first offered to His idol, which are later on distributed as prasads amongst the people. Lord Krishna is considered as the source of joy and happiness by its devotees.
On this day, there are certain performances. One such is Rasa Lila, which is the dramatic enactment of the life of Lord Krishna. This is specially performed in Mathura and Vrindavan. The Rasa Lila recreates the moments from the youthful days of Lord Krishna. There is also the Dahi Handi and this celebrates the joyful and playful side of Lord Krishna.
