About Janaki Jayanti

Janaki Jayanti is observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami every year in the month of Phalguna i.e. the eighth day of Krishna Paksha (February-March). It is the day when Goddess Sita appeared on the Earth.

Story of Goddess Sita :

Goddess Janaki is also known as Vaidehi, Sita, Maithili who was daughter of King Janak of Janakpur. Sita is called Janaki as the daughter of Janaka and Maithili as the princess of Mithila.[6] As the wife of Rama, she is called Ramā. Her father Janaka had earned the sobriquet Videha due to his ability to transcend body consciousness; Sita is therefore also known as Vaidehi.

She is daughter of the Earth Goddess Bhumi. Sita means furrow.

She is an avatar of Laxmi, wife of God Ram (avatar of Vishnu), prince of Arodhya.

Janaki is known for her commitment, self-sacrifice, bravery and purity.

Soon after her marriage with Lord Rama, she was forced into exile with her husband and brother-in-law, Laxmana. During the days of exile, she was abducted by King of Lanka, Ravana. She was rescued by Lord Rama with help of Lord Hanuman.

Sita went into fire to prove her purity. Thereafter, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita returned to Ayodhya. They were crowned as king and queen of Ayodhya. However, Lord Rama abandoned her pregnant wife, Sita when one of his subjects casts doubt over her purity. In the refuge of Sage Valmiki's hermitage Sita gave birth to twins Lava and Kusha. After her sons grew up and unite with their father, Sita returned to her mother, the Earth's womb, for release from a cruel world as a testimony of her purity. Her other names are Bhumija and Janaki.
