About Good Friday

Good Friday, also referred as "Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday", is the Friday which follows prior to Easter Sunday. It is celebrated by tradition as the day on which Jesus was crucified. On this day Christians remember passion, or sadness, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

The etymology of the term "good" in the context of Good Friday is contested. Some references say "good" to simply mean pious or holy, while others contend that it is a corruption of "God Friday"

Rituals and traditions on Good Friday

Numerous Christians follow this day by fasting, offering prayers, repentance, and thinking on the anguish and suffering of Christ on the cross.

The entire ceremony is solemn, with priests and deacons wearing black clothing. The platform and the altar are left uncovered, with no candles lighting them up. The main intend following this serious celebration is to make folks aware of the sorrow over the sacrifice of God's only begotten Son.

Rahu and Ketu emerged from the body and head of Rahu and they both were known for their immortality as they had consumed the Amrit. Though, they decided to shed a shadow on the Sun and the Moon reciprocating for their punishment. Thus, the malefic effects of the Rahu and Ketu grahas are said to rule over the eclipse period.

Different Christian countries have chosen different ways to observe Good Friday. In Mostly, there is a three-hour facility in the church, wherein passages from the Gospel are read about the Seven Last Words of Jesus. Each reading is followed by a message from the priest, a few minutes of silent meditation and a hymn. As Jesus was on the Cross between noon and 3:00 pm, when he finally left the world, the three hours are considered the most holy of all. An attachment called Three Hours Agony is believed at this time and is followed by rumination and reading the Gospel narratives of the Passion.

On this day, many people make and eat hot cross buns. These buns are little rolls marked with a cross on top. In Philippines, Christians hold processions in the streets and enact plays that recreate the events of Jesus Christ's last day. Devoted Christians allow themselves to be beaten, and a few even get themselves nailed to a cross, to display their authenticity towards God.
