About Anant Chaturdashi

Anant Chaturdashi is a festival observed and celebrated mainly by Jains and also by Hindus. It is a Sanskrit word of two words, Anant means eternal and Chaturdashi means fourteenth. Anant Chaturdashi falls on the 14 th day of the bright fortnight of Shukla paksha of the Bhado month. This is an auspicious festival for the Jain community. Jain observe fast in the last ten days of Bhado month. During the Bhado month, it is considered as sinful to eat garlic and onion, it advisable for jains to eat before sunset during the Bhado month. Many people even shun water after sunset in the same month. Anant Chaturdashi also known as anant Chaudas is the last day of fasts. Kshamavani, the day the jains ask for forgiveness from their elders for any mistakes they may have made intentionally or otherwise, is observed one day after Anant Chaturdashi.

Apart from being a Jain oriented festival, Anant chaturdashi is also the last day of the hindu festival of Ganeshotsav. It is generally the tenth or eleventh day after Ganesh Chaturthi. This day is also known as Ganesh Viasrjan wherein all the idols of lord Ganesha that were installed and worshipped for 10 days in houses and communities are immersed in the sea or nearby lakes or rivers. Lord Ganesha is departed, only tobe welcomed the next year with equal zeal and intensity.

Next Ganesh Visarjan :

Ganesh Visarjan is the last step of the Ganeshotsav festival. Ganesh Visarjan usually takes place on the 10 th day of the festival. This festival starts with installation of Lord Ganesha's idol and ends on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight lasts upto 10 days. People bring idol of Lord Ganesha made of clay to their homes or shrines, where to worship the idol for 10 days. At the end of the festival, the idols are immersed in water such as in pond or lake or river, this activity is known as Ganesha Visarjan. Ganesh Visarjan takes place on the fourteenth day of the sukla paksha of Bhado month, this day is also celebrated as Anant Chaturdashi by Jains.

On the last day, the idols made of clay are taken by the devotees to be immersed in water. People get down to the roads, singing and dancing in celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, asking Ganesha to shower his blessings. Then people merrily immerse the idols into water bodies such as River, pond or lakes. This festival is celebrated in Maharshtra, tamil nadu, Karnataka, Odissa, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Goa.
