Saptami which lies on Shukla Paksha of Magh month is also known as Surya Saptami, Achla Saptami, Arogya Saptami etc. When the Saptami is on Sunday, it is known as Achla Bhanu Saptami.

Lord Sun (Lord of Supreme Light) has a prime importance in Hinduism. Bhanu Saptami is observed in Magh month (January-February), Falguna month (February-March), Jyeshtha month (June-July), Karthik month (November-December) and Margashirsh month (December-January) by Hindus.

Magh Saptami or Ratha Saptami has much more importance.

Rituals that are performed on Bhanu Saptami :

  • Devotees take bath in Holy River or lake before sunrise.
  • After taking bath, one prays to Lord Sun standing near the river or lake.
  • Lamps are denoted on this day.
  • Devotees donate camphor, dhoop, flowers and fruits.
  • People make donations to poor.
  • Offer offerings and donations to Brahmas.
  • A person should also chant 'Om Ghrani Suryaya Namah' or 'Om Suryaya Namah'. Reading Aditya Hridiya Stotra is also considered to be auspicious.
