In India and especially for Tamil Hindus, Panguni Uthiram is a day of paramount significance. It occurs on the day the moon passes in the asterism of Uthiram in the twelfth month of the Tamil calendar, that is, Panguni (March/April). It is also the day on which the full moon occurs in the month of Panguni and is special because the Uthiram nakshatram corresponds with the full moon. The marriage of Muruga and Devasena, Andal and Rangamannar and Parvati and Parameshwara (Lord Shiva) took place on this day, marking its significance. It is also speculated that on this day, Ram and Sitas marriage took place along every holy water flowing to the sacred tank of Thumburu teertha in Tirupati. Also, Goddess Mahalakshmi incarnated on earth from an ocean of milk and hence it is celebrated as Mahalakshmi Jayanti as well. The main implication of this day is to celebrate the bond of marriage and household life. It is said to be the day on which partners should deal with any sort of relationship problems, learning from the life of the great deities married on this day. Followers go to the Murgan and Perur temple during the Panguni Uthiram festival to pray.
