Lakshmi Panchami which is also known as Shri Panchami and Shri Vrata is the day which is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. She is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Lakshmi Panchami is observed on the fifth day during the waxing phase of the moon in Chaitra month – Chaitra Shukla Paksha Panchami.

While worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, idol of Goddess Lakshmi should be placed on a platform. The idol should be cleaned with Panchamrit. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with many different prayers.

Sandalwood, banana leaves, garland of flowers, rice, durva, red thread, supari, coconut and other things should be used to worship Goddess Lakshmi. Food is offered to Brahmanas after worshipping Goddess Lakshmi. Some money as Dakshina is also given to them. A person following fast on this day is blessed with wealth and prosperity. A person should not consume food during this fast except fruits, milk and sweets.

Goddess Lakshmi is a representation of wealth and success. She is one of the three most powerful Goddesses. Goddess Lakshmi is also linked with feelings related to attraction and greed.

  • The puja and fasting (Vrat) is followed by both men and women.
  • Married couples perform the Puja together
  • Home should be kept neat and clean
  • Those observing the Margashirsh Lakshmi puja invite seven married and seven young girls on the first day of the puja offer them fruits, haldi kumkum and a book containing the Mahalakshmi Vrat Katha
