Makar Sankranti is celebrated all over India by different names. As per lunar calendar sun moves to Uttrayan from Dakshinayan or from tropic of Cancer to tropic of Capricorn. It marks the arrival of spring season. This festival is celebrated on the 14th January of every year but in few exceptional cases it is also celebrated on 13th and 15th of January.

This festival is celebrated with different culturesin different parts of India. Many People take a holy dip in the holy Ganga on theday. Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival which is dedicated to the Lord Sun. In South India it is celebrated as Pongal and in Punjab this festival is celebrated as Maghi, in Gujarat it is known as Uttrayan, hence people fly different colourful kites to pay their regards to God. People make Til laddu (sesame) which is made of sesame and Jaggery. This festival is called Bihu in Assam. Makar sankranti is a festival of new beginning.

It is also believed that on this day Lord sun visited his son Lord Saturn but they did not go along well. So makarsankranti is a day when people start a new beginning and forget all the negativity. It is also believed that who so ever dies on this day gets Moksha. In the Mahabharata, Bhishm Pitamah also chose this day to leave his body, and went to heaven. It is also believed that on the day of Makar Sankranti River ganga followd Bhagirath and came on the earth.

On this day Lord Sun is worshiped and chanting the Surya mantra is beneficial.
